An Exclusive Biggani.org Interview on AI, Smart Construction, Higher Education in South Korea and International Research Opportunities

Can artificial intelligence do more than power computers and software applications? Could it also help construct safer buildings, monitor infrastructure, identify railway defects and transform the future of civil engineering?

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape industries worldwide, its applications in construction and infrastructure are opening exciting possibilities for researchers and engineers.

To explore these developments, Biggani.org is delighted to announce an exclusive interview with Dr. Bilawal Mahmood, an accomplished researcher and educator from Pakistan who specializes in artificial intelligence, digital construction technologies and smart infrastructure systems.

Dr. Mahmood is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology (GIKI), Pakistan. His research focuses on Building Information Modeling (BIM), artificial intelligence, computer vision, augmented reality and digital technologies for intelligent construction and infrastructure management.

Through this special interview, students and aspiring researchers will have an opportunity to learn about his academic journey, international research experiences and the growing intersection of artificial intelligence and civil engineering.

From Pakistan to South Korea: An Inspiring Research Journey

Dr. Bilawal Mahmood began his academic journey at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore, Pakistan, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Geological Engineering in 2013.

Driven by his interest in advanced engineering research, he pursued higher education in South Korea. In 2017, he joined Hanyang University in Seoul through a fully funded scholarship to undertake an integrated graduate and doctoral program in Construction Engineering and Management.

He successfully completed his PhD in 2021.

Following his doctoral studies, Dr. Mahmood continued his academic career as a postdoctoral researcher at Hanyang University and later at the Korea National University of Transportation.

His academic journey also extends beyond university laboratories. He has gained valuable industry experience through large-scale construction and infrastructure projects, including projects in Saudi Arabia that involved implementing internationally recognized Building Information Modeling standards.

His professional journey demonstrates how advanced academic research can be translated into practical engineering solutions that address real-world challenges.

How Artificial Intelligence Is Transforming the Construction Industry

Construction is one of the world’s most important industries, supporting the development of buildings, transportation networks and essential infrastructure. However, traditional construction methods often face challenges related to productivity, safety, project monitoring and infrastructure maintenance.

Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, computer vision, digital twins and augmented reality are creating new opportunities to address these challenges.

Dr. Mahmood’s research explores how these technologies can improve construction processes and support more intelligent decision-making.

One of his notable research contributions involves using deep learning and computer vision to estimate the three-dimensional position of excavators. Such research can support digital monitoring, simulation and improved understanding of construction equipment operations.

He has also investigated Scan-to-BIM technologies for identifying geometric defects in railway infrastructure, helping advance digital approaches to railway maintenance and asset management.

Another important area of his work involves augmented reality and digital twin systems, which can connect physical construction environments with digital models to support visualization, monitoring and safety analysis.

His research findings have been published in internationally recognized scientific journals, including Automation in Construction, Remote Sensing and Buildings.

These contributions demonstrate how artificial intelligence is expanding beyond traditional computing applications and becoming an increasingly important component of modern engineering.

Why Is This Interview Important for Bangladeshi Students?

Many students in Bangladesh dream of becoming scientists, engineers or researchers. Others aspire to pursue higher education abroad, particularly in countries with advanced research facilities and strong international academic networks.

However, students often face important questions:

How should they prepare for research while studying at university? What skills are necessary to pursue a PhD abroad? How can they identify suitable research topics and international scholarship opportunities? What does it take to build a career that combines academic research with industrial innovation?

Dr. Mahmood’s academic and professional experiences offer a valuable perspective on these questions.

His journey from Pakistan to South Korea through a fully funded scholarship, followed by international research appointments and a university teaching career, provides a practical example of how students can develop a research-oriented professional pathway.

During the interview, the discussion is expected to explore several important areas, including preparation for higher education abroad, the importance of research skills, international academic experiences and the connection between engineering education and real-world technological innovation.

The discussion will be particularly relevant to students studying or considering careers in civil engineering, computer science, artificial intelligence, data science and related disciplines.

It may also help younger students understand that modern scientific research increasingly requires knowledge from multiple disciplines rather than expertise in only one traditional subject.

Understanding the Skills Needed to Become a Researcher

What does it take to become a successful researcher?

Is academic excellence enough, or do students also need programming skills, analytical thinking, creativity and the ability to solve complex problems?

How important are international collaboration, scientific publications and practical research experience when building an academic career?

These are important considerations for young people who wish to contribute to science and technology.

By learning from Dr. Mahmood’s experiences, participants will have an opportunity to better understand how research careers develop over time and why persistence, continuous learning and interdisciplinary thinking matter.

His work also illustrates the growing importance of combining engineering knowledge with emerging digital technologies.

For students who are interested in artificial intelligence but are unsure how it can be applied beyond software development, this interview may introduce new perspectives on engineering research and future career opportunities.

An Opportunity to Learn from a Researcher’s Real-Life Experience

Scientific achievement rarely happens overnight. Behind every research publication, technological development or academic milestone lies a process of learning, experimentation, collaboration and overcoming challenges.

Listening to researchers discuss their experiences can help students develop a more realistic understanding of academic life and scientific careers.

At Biggani.org, we believe that introducing young people to scientists and researchers can help make scientific careers more accessible, understandable and inspiring.

This interview is not simply an opportunity to learn about Dr. Mahmood’s professional achievements. It is also a chance to explore how scientific curiosity can develop into meaningful research and how advanced technologies can contribute to solving practical problems.

For students planning to pursue international higher education, it offers an opportunity to gain insights from someone who has experienced university research, postdoctoral work and industry-based engineering projects in different countries.
