How does a molecule created in a research laboratory move step by step toward becoming a potential medicine? How does a chemistry student from Bangladesh become involved in international research on antiviral drugs and new therapeutic approaches?
To explore these questions, Biggani.org is pleased to welcome Dr. Imrul Shahriar for a special interview on his journey through science, higher education, and drug discovery.
Dr. Shahriar is currently Director of Discovery at Eradivir Inc. in the United States. After growing up in Chattogram, he studied Chemistry at the University of Dhaka and later joined Purdue University in 2019 for his PhD in Chemistry, which he completed in 2023. He subsequently worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Purdue while also becoming involved with Eradivir. His work focuses on combining chemistry and biology to discover new therapeutic agents and help advance promising scientific ideas toward clinical development.
A major area of his research is the development of new antiviral therapies, particularly for influenza. His work has involved a bispecific immunotherapy approach designed to target a virus while also recruiting the body’s own immune system to help identify and eliminate infected cells. One investigational molecule arising from this work, EV25, has progressed from preclinical studies into human clinical evaluation. His professional profile also highlights his role in advancing a novel influenza therapeutic from concept toward the clinic.
There is also an important Bangladesh connection. According to the information provided by Dr. Shahriar, a subsequent stage of EV25 research is being conducted in Bangladesh in collaboration with icddr,b. At the same time, his research is expanding beyond infectious diseases to explore whether similar therapeutic strategies could also be applied in oncology.
For Bangladeshi students, this conversation offers much more than a scientific discussion. It is an opportunity to learn how a student can move from a local educational environment into international research, how graduate studies and scientific careers develop, and how researchers deal with experiments that fail before meaningful discoveries are made.
The interview will also explore the qualities young researchers need, the importance of asking good scientific questions, the role of mentorship, and the long journey required to transform a research idea into something that may eventually benefit patients.
Dr. Shahriar’s message to young students is particularly relevant: research does not always begin with an expensive laboratory or sophisticated equipment. It begins with curiosity, a meaningful question, the willingness to test ideas, and the perseverance to continue after failure.
Students interested in science, chemistry, biology, drug discovery, higher education, research careers, and global scientific opportunities are warmly invited to join this special Biggani.org conversation.
