About
Dr. Md. Samdani Azad is a structural engineer and researcher whose academic and professional work integrates structural engineering, structural reliability, computational mechanics, and artificial intelligence. He currently serves as Civil Engineering Manager in the AI-Computer Vision Team at the R&D Center of Jangmin E&C, South Korea, where he works on AI-based structural health monitoring and condition assessment of bridges and tunnels.
A major focus of Dr. Azad’s research is the safety and reliability assessment of aging and deteriorating infrastructure. His research interests include structural reliability, seismic engineering, seismic vulnerability assessment, probabilistic risk assessment, uncertainty quantification, and Bayesian inference. He also works on integrating physics-based engineering models with probabilistic and data-driven approaches to improve the safety, reliability, and assessment of critical infrastructure.
Dr. Azad earned his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology (RUET), Bangladesh, followed by a Master of Engineering from Mahidol University, Thailand, and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Konkuk University, South Korea. His academic and professional experience spans structural reliability, nonlinear analysis, seismic assessment, offshore and nuclear structures, material assessment, and infrastructure monitoring.
He has held research positions at Konkuk University, Yonsei University, and Inha University. He also contributes as a Research Consultant at the Disaster Resistant Structures Laboratory, Konkuk University. His research has involved nonlinear finite-element analysis, probabilistic modelling, Bayesian methods, machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, and surrogate modelling for structural and infrastructure applications.
Dr. Azad has published numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers in areas including seismic fragility, nuclear structure safety, structural deterioration, offshore infrastructure, cementitious materials, structural reliability, and artificial intelligence. He has also contributed to major research projects supported by Korean government agencies and international research programs. Beyond research, he is active in academic mentoring, technical training, and scientific service. He has delivered seminars and lectures on computational structural engineering, seismic assessment, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, and serves as a reviewer for several international journals.
His academic contributions have received recognition during his research career. During his Ph.D. at Konkuk University, he was selected for the Excellent Research Assistantship for three consecutive semesters. In 2026, he was also selected for the Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship, although the fellowship was not taken up.
Through his research and professional work, Dr. Azad aims to advance infrastructure engineering by integrating mechanics-based modelling, probabilistic reasoning, monitoring technologies, and artificial intelligence to support safer, more reliable, and more resilient infrastructure systems. His work demonstrates how structural engineering can be combined with modern computational and AI-based approaches to address complex infrastructure challenges.
